The University of St Andrews is the oldest university in Scotland and the third oldest English speaking University. It is one of the UKs leading research universities. The group participating in this collaboration occurs as a result of the strong commitment to cross-disciplinary working in the sciences as evidenced by the Universities investment in the creation of a Science campus bringing together Medicine, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, the School of Physics and Astronomy was ranked joint second (with Cambridge and Nottingham) in the UK, the Chemistry Department was the leading department in Scotland. The Applied Mathematics Division of the School of Mathematics and Statistics was 4th overall in the UK for Applied Mathematics.
