IP-P is a world-renowned centre of excellence for its research on infectious diseases. IP-P offers outstanding research facilities and has a long tradition and reputation in conducting excellent tuberculosis and mycobacterial research as shown by a recent survey – “Essential Science Indicators” -where IP-P was ranked first by total cites out of a pool of more than 9,000 institutions publishing on the topic “tuberculosis” within the last 10 years. (Sciencewatch).
Besides other research activities on mycobacteria, the team of Dr. Roland Brosch is presently collecting very valuable experience in establishing an TB aerosol infection model in guinea pigs, where the animals are treated with novel antituberculosis molecules, such as Benzothiazinones (BTZ), in comparison with established drugs such as isoniazid (INH). This experience will also be of importance for implementing the proposed project.
